1. INTRODUCTION
W
e have been trusted with the preparation of the
Restoration Plan for the Monumental Complex
of the
Real Alcázar
of Seville, a technical docu-
ment which will be used as a basis for the plan-
ning and organization of the actions that will be taken in the restora-
tion of this complex. This task has been given to us by the Board of
Trustees of the
Real Alcázar
of Seville and the Town Hall of the city,
headed by Mr. Jacinto Pérez Elliott.
In order to do that, this task was divided into two parts. In the first
part, which was longer, we elaborated an inventory including the
elements, ensembles or parts of the ensembles where a conservation
or restoration intervention could be made. This inventory is called
“Interventions Record” and is included in this article. On the other
hand, the second part would establish the priority of these interven-
tions, according to the analysis of the “Interventions Record”.
Toward the beginning and the elaboration of this work, three
main starting points were set. One of them was to make a techni-
cal document that could be adapted, extended and changed. It
should be able to accept modifications, the replacement of the
completed interventions and the incorporation of new actions.
Ultimately, it should be a living document capable of being used
as a basis in the present but, at the same time, that can still be
used in the future after being duly updated.
The second determinant was the integration of this piece of
work into a common technical document for the planning of the
complex of the
Real Alcázar
of Seville. This document would be
composed by three different parts: firstly, this Restoration Plan;
secondly, the Planning of Archeology and Investigation Activi-
ties, run by Miguel Ángel Tabales; and thirdly, the architectural
planning for uses and spaces, made by Francisco Reina’s team.
The necessary interdependence and feedback between every part
has implied a genuine coordination effort to try to incorporate
coherence to this common document.
Finally, the third starting point is linked to the area of activity of
the task, the
Real Alcázar
of Seville. It seems to be a perfectly de-
fined enclosure, but it needs some specifications. First of all, the
new delimitation draft by the Special Protection Plan exceeds the
current limits, including the square Patio de Banderas and every
house within it, the municipal day-care center and the square
Pa-
tio de la Contratación
1. At the moment, all these areas are beyond
the perimeters and the supervision of the
Real Alcázar
, but they
are an essential part of its historic process and transformation.
Francisco Reina’s Study of Architectural Planning also agrees
with this. In this study, the integration of these areas into the
Real Alcázar
is suggested, and so have we expressed it in our Res-
toration Plan. Besides that, the areas that are part of the National
Heritage are those located between the current boundaries and
the interior of the place. It includes the upper floor and the mez-
zanine floor of the
Palacio Mudéjar
, the building of the kitchens
between the
Patio del Asistente
and the
Jardín del Príncipe
and a
great part of the rooms surrounding the
Patio del Crucero
. This
implied some restriction of access that, together with the time
limits, made us focus the study on the rooms, patios and gardens
that are dependent on the Board of Trustees, as they were easily
accessible.
